I see a large hole running laterally across the front of my engine block, just underneath the exhaust manifold. It looks like a mounting point for some crash bars, but I can't say I have ever seen crash bars on a sportbike before.

My question is: Is this a crash-bar mount, and if so, what crash bars would fit?

There is a cheap pair of dinged ones on Ebay for an XJ650 and I am wondering if these bars are universal.

Thanks,

The only crash bars, that I'm aware of, that will fit are specific to the XS400 DOHC engine found in Maxim's and Seca's. If you have the skills, you could make your own. It is a simple design.

My Maxim 400 had a one piece rectangular loop bar which I imagine would be suitable for a dohc seca engine - unless the headers are different.
I've attached a couple of photos, but apologize for them not being clearer.

The 2-piece ones (for the XJ650) would bolt on differently - one to each side of the engine block and the frame support. I don't think they would fit the 400 dohc which does not have an external frame cradle.
The 3rd pic below is one side of an XJ650 engine showing the difference.
The 4th pic shows a different (3-bar) style on another XS650
