Hi chaps. I need to replace my front caliper to finish rebuilding a stock 1980 SG. Standard mag wheels, with bolt holes for the disk only on the right hand side.... and right fork only has the lugs....so no simple option to mount an XS500 caliper and disk on the left hand side. Has anyone either got a stock 1980 XS400 caliper I could purchase, or alternatively has anyone got real world experience of mounting a different model caliper to the stock fork lugs and disk on the right hand side?

p.s. I know I could change the forks with (for example) Aprilla 125, or do other stuff like that. But I want to rebuild the bike as standard as possible...... so your assistance with that specific request would be most appreciated. Many thanks

Thanks. It's the caliper body that I need.....not the operating piston and associated parts.

You are probably stuck with eBay for exact OE.

Parts catalog says 3F9-25810-02-00 is unavailable. However, it also says it was superseded by 11H-25810-02-00 which was superseded by 4JF-2580U-00-00.

That last one is available from Yamaha, but it's something like $450.

Based on all that, there are a few potential candidates.

RD350
RD400
TX500
TX650
TX750
TZ250
TZ350
TZ750
XS500
XS650

They are probably close enough to mount up, but I haven't tried it myself, so take it with a grain of salt.

Thanks for that info. Finding the exact caliper is proving more difficult than I ever imagined.....so making another model fit, may well be the only option. I'll do some more research.....your suggestions will be a great start

Thanks buddy. Yamaha do a new one at $400+. Nothing on ebay anywhere. However, I've solved the problem. Got a mate to put it on his lathe and he managed to drill out the piston.

I usually got stuck pistons out with compressed air or grease.

For the replacement pistons, there are places that make stainless ones. They are nice.

I got one here: https://hvccycle.net

You might have a more local source.
