Hi all really stuck! Went to re-install the kick start today on my 77 xs400 and the part of the internal mechanism has snapped! It looks like it's been welded on pretty poorly by someone. What can I do? Can it operate on an electric start only?

Really am stuck here thanks in advance

If your e-start works fine use it. This seems to happen often with these bikes when people kick them to hard. The only way to fix it right is to replace the bottom case.

Kicking them too hard or trying to kick them over with the side case cover removed to turn the engine over during a build or maintenance; it needs that extra outer layer of support.

Okay great. So it will still start with the electric start? I.e. it doesn't use the same mechanism as the kick start? Excuse my ignorance I really don't have a clue!

Thanks again!

Had the same issue here! The previous owner didn't tell me about this ( There wasn't any kickstart arm on the bike when i bought it !) i was really sad about that ! But the bike starts fine with the e start !
