Help with taking off rear chain gear?

Does anyone have any tips on taking off the chain gear on the rear wheel? It has that big C-clip on it that I cannot seem to get off. Any help would be great!

I use on of these deals for c-clip removal

If that style doesn't do the trick I know that Sears carries beastly large ones in their automotive section. I am always surprised by what I can find there that isn't carried by dedicated auto parts stores.

I used a large nail which i grind down a bit.

get one side up and the whole thing then pings off and you then spend 1/2 hour looking for it

I lost the innards from a brake master cylinder once and it didn't take 30 minutes to find the parts... it took like 3 hours!
