Smoke from engine

If the idle mixture is too lean, it will not want to return to low idle once it's been revved up. I would go to 3.5 turns out and see what happens- have you adjusted the valves and balanced the carbs? That will not cause this issue, but it's tough to fine tune a carb without doing this first.
 
Ah I see, gonna make one more turn tomorrow and see how it behaves.
Is synching carbs the same as balancing? I examined the butterfly valve and they seemed to be in sync.
Valves not adjusted. Is that a "DIY" job, or better take it to a pro?
 
Valve adjustment is a DIY job as long as you have some mechanical skills and have downloaded the manual from this forum. Syncing and balancing are the same thing.
 
Sounds like you have another problem,but you solved one,the starting.Check the fuel level[floats] in your carbs,sometimes if the floats are sticking,they'll act like that.Other than that,I don't have any ideas except maybe air leaks will effect the idle like that. lha
