it needs a water pump now so i was thinking it would make a great bbq pit

Regarding an xs of that era's mileage. I also average about 50 miles per gallon, and find that anything less is float bowl related. Very easy to fix. Great commuter bike and mine gets many admiring stares for it's very 70's appearance.

The only problem I had on longs trips was the stock seat: not enough cushion. I swiped one of those Air Hawk pads off Amazon (medium was kinda big) and it was smooth sailing from there!
