I have an 83 Maxim.

So the box just behind my carbs is my air filter box, correct? What about the "filter" below it shown in the picture. Is that also an air filter and if it is not, what is it? I see a lot of bikes in this forum with "pod filters" replacing the box. They do look cool but what is the advantage of replacing mine with "pods"?

The little filter shown in your picture is an oil case breather filter...its a bolt on upgrade.
If you replace your airboxes with pods or bellmouths, aside from getting rid of unsightly and bulky plastic parts, you will get more air in,more bang for for your buck....you will probably need to make a slight adjustment to your carbs to compensate. The standard airbox/filters do strangle the engine somewhat.Plus they look cool!!!!.....I have adapted a pair of bellmouths from a Ducati on mine, with home made mesh....see my album for pics..
Hope that helps:thumbsup:
