TOM SCHANNE
XS400 Enthusiast
This weekend I finally completed the restoration of my 81 XS400HS. The bike was given to me by my Son in laws Father who hadn't ridden it since around 1986. It was sitting in a shed since then rusting away and covered in paint splatter. I spent months cleaning out the rust and gunk from the gas tank, then had it repainted and added a stripe from a 650. Carbs were rebuilt with OEM parts, front brake MC and calipers rebuilt. I sourced out fenders, blinkers, headlight bucket, chain guard etc. from the good people here and cleaned up the rest of the chrome with all kinds of different concoctions. Coca-cola and tinfoil, Steel wool, a tub of rust buster to soak parts in etc. I adjusted the valves to recommended specs. She fires right up and seems to run like a champ although I haven't really ridden it yet. I need to get to DMV and register the bike and get a tag for it before I can take her out for a proper test run.
Anyway here she is.
