Hey Everybody,

Can you tell me what this cable does on my 83 Maxim 400? The connector is broken at the clutch lever so the cable keeps coming off. Cable on or off doesn't affect function of the bike. I can't find reference for this cable in the manual. If you know what this is and does, let me know.

Thanks

Looks exactly like the cable that is usually attached to the hand brake lever switch. So that when you pull the brake lever, the tail light lights up, but its really weird that its on the clutch lever. My 1982 xs400 maxim does not have that wire on the clutch perch. My only guess is that maybe with your specific model, that could be a safety switch that is used so you can't start the bike initially without the clutch lever pulled in. Still seems weird that mine doesn't have it at all. Maybe that was its original purpose, and someone disabled it further up on the wiring harness.

Clutch safety switch.
Should prevent the bike from starting when not in neutral/clutch in.
