kickstart engagement

Sometimes (about half the time) when I kickstart my xs400, I feel resistance but can't hear any sounds that I am turning anything as far as what it what it sounds like when I get a good kick and she starts. Kind of seems like a slippage. Any ideas ? Thanx. BAC

This is to be expected: Your first "kick" motion is just to get the gears positioned so that they meet together, if they are then the lever should be parallel with the ground. Otherwise the teeth of each gear are trying to occupy the same space, and all you will accomplish is bending them a little (unless you're strong enough to break the teeth off!). Check out some pics of the kickstart gear to get a better idea of what's going on.

You are right Monk. I got the bike last week and so far I love it. Cept the wind blast from the harleys going around me make it tough to steer sometimes. Thanks again!
