Just got a '78 XS400 last weekend and joined the forums. Bike has been sitting for the past 10+ years with the carbs off so it'll definitely need some TLC. Thankful for this resource.

Speaking of carbs, from what I gather on the forum these bikes originally came with Mikuni carbs. The carbs that were with it were Keihin. The only numbers I have found are stamped in to the body - 1241RL17. I'm pretty sure the slide is round. I've attached some pics. Can anybody help me identify these carbs? Thanks

Yes, our bikes had mikuni CV carbs. What you have are Keihin carbs. They are CV as well, pretty much the exact same thing as our stock carbs. Can't tell you what size they are, you'll have to measure. Probably came off a Honda twin.

If I'm trying to order a rebuild and tuning kit for these carbs, what would I tell the sales guy? A CV style Keihin? I'm pretty new to motorcycle carbs. I'm used to automotive stuff with model and serial numbers.

I honestly have no idea. They might be Kawasaki KZ440 carbs? I'd start asking around on a forum that specializes in multiple bikes, someone might recognize those casting numbers and be able to give you a specific model they came off of.

Have you checked to see if the outlet spacing is correct on the set? Will they even line up with the XS400 intake boots?

Edit- Yeah, check the KZrider forums... They look to be 80-84? KZ440 LTD carbs.
