I will post some pics tonight, but generally speaking, how serious of an issue is pitting on the valve contacting side of the valve adjustment screws?

They are cheap parts so i will most likely replace them, but is it critical to replace them prior to running the bike?

They appear to be about .5mm deep maybe less, can i file these down and shim the valve?

Or can i replace with new, and somehow avoid having to buy/trade shims?

If they have any pits or flat spots in them just replace them. I have done this with most of my bikes now. Yamaha still had them as of a few months age and they not have hex heads on them for a allen head wrench. Much easier and more accurate to adjust then the old slotted ones.

No valve shimming on a sohc xs400. Just gaping or lash what ever you want to call it.
