Can any of you guys tell me if the body of the rectifier needs earthing or is it bolted to the battery carrier to use as a heatsink only?

As a heat sink. The black wire coming out of the rectifier goes to ground. On one side you have the three wires from the stator. This is the three phase AC. The rectifier converts this AC to DC with diodes. It comes out DC on the red and black wires. Red to battery positive and the black to ground.
