Rear wheel spindle

Hi....
I have a hardtailed frame,made to suit a Harley Rear wheel.I want to fit a Yamaha SR250 rear wheel but can't find a spindle to suit.I can find threaded steel rod in the right dia. but am not sure if this is ok to use a as a wheel spindle?
Any thoughts??

I've now managed to find a spindle the right dia and length.....from a CB500!!!!
