took alternator cover off...oil poured out..why?

I took my altenator cover off for the first time today to attempt timing the bike and oil came pouring out of the small hole on the bottom, how bad is this?

Bike was on the kick stand...does that matter?

It's supposed to. Either drain the oil, put it on the center stand, or otherwise have it straight up when you take the cover off. Even then, it could drip.

Like Hough said, the alternator runs in an oil bath...perfectly normal...
