    '79 XS400 - Petcock and Lean troubles

Appreciate the feedback BC. I did change the mufflers out and kept the stock pipes, so is likely a big culprit in the whole scenario, and I expect the cracked carb holders are contributing as well. That said, this is my first bike with mechanical ignition, so checking the points and looking at...

    '79 XS400 - Petcock and Lean troubles

Two problems, one thread. I know I'm giving myself trouble, but want to make sure they're not related. Problem One: Petcock So I used the petcock rebuild kit, but am having a significant issue. The only runs out of the petcock when I've got it set to PR (Prime?) but won't flow when set to ON...

    Small windshield question.

I ordered my cafe fairing from Philips Lockhart, it's universal, but just note that the stock bars don't fit with it.

    '79 XS400 VIN Number location?!

Insurance company only has Maxim, Special, and Seca as far as sub models, but I believe mine is none of the above. Anybody able to tell me if a 3N3 VIN designates any of the above 3?

    Kickstarter Hole Plug

Was noticing that my kickstarter wasn't engaging, after opening up the clutch cover and removing the assembly looks like the engine case mount is cracked :banghead: Will deal with the cracked mount via weld. Bike starts great with the e-start and I'm not in the mood to replace the engine...

'79 Starter Solenoid - After market options?

    '79 XS400 VIN Number location?!

Hey all, I'm attempting to register my bike, but I can't seem to locate the full VIN. I've got the first three characters (3N3) - the 6 digits - but am missing the 8 digit serial number, don't see it on the sticker or the frame. :wtf:

Canadian Looking for Headlight/Turn light conversion

Because getting the right parts in Canada can be a PITFA, thought I'd try to reach out to my Canucklehead cohorts for some parts hunt advice. Specifically, I'm finishing a restoration of a '79 XS400, and am concerned about the headlight brightness, and am also having relay issues with the...

    9003 headlight installed!

Good to know. Sounds like I have some wiring to do. Got a link to the best thread for making an LED Signal / Bi-Xenon conversion? (or links)

    9003 headlight installed!

I'm at the final stages of restoring my '79 and am pretty concerned about brightness, but don't want to go the HID conversion route. Good to know this works, I wonder if it's the brightest option without a headache?

'79 - Separating exhaust from pipe

Couldn't find it in the manual and before I go down the wrong path, what's the right way to separate the head pipe from the exhaust? I've removed the collar but it still feels solid. Looks to be some form of bushing holding it in place, but I'm probably just "doing it wrong". Advice...

I'm going to be riding it, but would like to keep with the classic styling. Really just trying to find a balance of a classic looking tread with some decent performance.

Tire recos for 1979 XS400 restore - Classic look & performance

Hey all, So I'm continuing to work on the restore of my '79 XS400. It has spoked 18s front and rear and tire sizes of 3.00-18 front and 3.50-18 rear (the stock tires are still on this bad boy). So, what's my best option for balancing ride performance and tread wear, while keeping a classic...

    '79 XS400 - Hasn't been started in 33 years

Well here's the first post of what will likely be many. 2 nights ago I picked up an absolutely amazing 1979 XS400. It was bought by the owner new in 80', was ridden for 4500km until 1982, and has been parked in a garage ever since. The bike's in almost perfect shape, though as expected the...
