Hi folks just installed a new exhaust system on my xs400 it consists of used headers from the USA and new cocktail shaker mufflers from the UK. Straight forward install they mounted to the original exhaust mounts, just had to remove the rear footpegs. They sound amazing but way too loud! So I'm waiting on some acoustic packing to arrive before I venture out on the open road. I will 're-jet when it's quieter and can take her for a few plug chops.

I have the same mufflers and I have to upset you, there's almost no space for packing there. You can only wrap the baffles with a very thin layer otherwise they won't fit back inside. Had to have my baffles re-welded to allow more packing.

Yeah I know cjxs. Already tried to pack it with fiberglass wool "no good " kept blowing out. Hopefully this acoustic mat will work installed from the engine side, which should expand around the baffle when heat is applied. Well that's the plan, wish me luck lol..

Hi cjxs, forgotten to mention, Clementine is absolutely stunning! I have her picture as my screen saver, hope you don't mind.

Whoa, thanks! Glad to hear that. Would be cool if you documented this acoustic mat installation and even cooler if you did a before and after video/sound. I'm still wanting to quite them a bit more.

That's the stuff I ordered drewpy, have you tried it?.
Cjxs have done a before vid, but can't seem to load it on the site!. Will try and document the procedure, it's all down to how many hands I have free lol.

I have, its made down the road from me, but can't get it cheaper :(

without taking the muffler apart it seems to do its job

Well tried the acustafil matting ,got as much in as it would take and it' still very loud ! Don't know what to do now ??? Will just have to see if it will pass a MOT test next year .
Put bigger main jets in 137's as the stock in my carbs were 125's feels ok so far just need time to do plug chop .

You could always try packing with some heavy duty steel wool.Theres a thread about it in the bundled how to do section.
Im kinda in the same predictment with my mufflers trying to mod them so they are quieter. When I get the chance I post a pic of what I have.

Well bit the bullet and splashed out a whole £ on some stainless pot scrubbers. One up each muffler and now I can ride without earplugs!...
Problem solved. Does anyone know how long they will last before they burn out?.

I've had stainless steel pot scrubbers as packing in my mufflers for over 10,000 km and they are still intact and doing their job to keep the noise subdued. Much better life than the steel wool or fiberglass that I tried first.

Did you just pack them straight down the baffle or did you pack them in between the baffle and the muffler itself?

My mufflers have removable end caps with a perforated center core that is about 6" long. I slipped the scrubbers over the core until it was completely covered and then secured the one on the end with stainless steel wire so they can't fall off. I think I put 6 or 7 scrubbers over each core. Slipped them back into the mufflers and called it done.

hi, just took the mufflers off and popped 1 in each covering the outlet port, just the right size . ran about 100km took them off for a look , they were still in the same position .
great note from the pipes and not to loud now , they look great on the bike to so give them a go !.

Hi Scorpio, don't know , it was on the bike when I bought her , sorry can't help . Mechanically she's in good shape , just needs a good clean and a paint I think .
