Alright. So last year I started this thread: http://www.xs400.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12997 and never got around to fixing it... Shame on me. But anyway, the rectifier shows no continuity (tested like in the manual) in the connector between any leads. Am I doing something wrong or am I just the first person ever to have a rectifier go bad for no reason? The only person who responded last time seemed to be in disbelief when i said no continuity.

and regarding the replacement, found this

suggesting this...

...But its for a 77. Anybody know if it works (or will work for a 77)? the jury never came back on that thread...

any help mucho appreciated! Riding season is growing near

Does your multimeter have a diode setting? Easiest way to check rectifiers/diodes. If your meter doesn't, well then its a POS and you should probably get a better one :)

OH YEAH. Just remembered why i forgot that the rectifier didnt work... I went to the local boneyard and the guy informed me that digital multimeters dont work on diodes like that. His 30 year old analog meter showed that it was working perfectly.

Thanks for the memory booster. jeez. ...This is why i need to sell one of my bikes. I get sidetracked and then a year later i suddenly find myself wanting to ride a particular bike but cant remember what i figured out was wrong with it.

Anyway... I'll hopefully get that regulator wired in this weekend. Thanks again.

Well, good digital multimeter's can check diodes/rectifiers. My fluke will tell me forward or reverse bias, forward voltage drop, etc.

i see. I went for the one that was ten dollars up from the cheapest one at autozone. It works great when it works...
