    Piston ring damage

Hey all. Been a minute since I've posted on here. Anyways, I'm looking for answers about some self-inflicted damage I've done to my new pistons. It seems that while I was trying to slip on the cylinders over the pistons, I pinched one of the rings and slightly damaged the ring landing. My...

    Rebore or hone

Thanks for the quick responses guys. I'll bring it to the machine shop this weekend and see what they say. So anyone out there in xs400-land know of a seller that has oversize pistons? I know oversize rings are available off of ebay but I haven't looked into pistons much.

    Rebore or hone

In the process of a top end rebuild on an sohc 400. So the jugs are off the bike and after a visual inspection, I'm not so sure what the status is. When I take it to the shop, should I ask for a rebore or just a hone? And can I get away with ordering just new rings (oversize or standard) or do I...

Canadians. Where do you order your tires from?

Have you asked the old motorcycle shop down in Ogden? They usually ramp up their inventory in the spring time.

Power loss between 4000-5000 rpm when in gear

Maybe have a look at your main jet to see if you have the correct size. Someone with a bit more knowledage might come and correct me but im pretty sure that the main takes over at around 4000 rpms.

    Rd wheels on xs400

Just want to know if anyone on here has had success fitting wire spoked rd350 or rd250 rims onto an xs400. Did the drum brakes give you any trouble? Did the axles slide right in? Did you need new wheel bearings?

Click sound, falling idle, backfiring when cold starting

Hey all. So like the title says, I have an odd click noise occurring lately. Was messing with the electrical recantly, but that was just to clean up the mess that the PO left me and to install new turn signals. I feel like it's completely unrelated but not going to rule it out just yet...

PLEASE HELP-Major issues after installing new parts.

Also for the next time, maybe put your thread in the proper place in the forum. This is more of an electrical issue then a carb issue. Not trying to bag on you, but everyone likes a bit of organization. Good luck!:bike:

PLEASE HELP-Major issues after installing new parts.

Change the flasher. Your new lights draw less power which in turn causes the flasher not to activate and not completing the circuit. Flasher is located close to where your seat and tank meet. Auto value or Napa or any automotive store of your choice should have new flashers. Remember to buy a 2...

Head and taillight work, turn signals dont

Still stumped! Wiring seems to check out correctly. I have power to only work the back left signal. If I plug in the front, neither work. Am I missing something else?

Head and taillight work, turn signals dont

Should also say: wiring is the exact same as it was before. Just redid what was already there to fix the damage. Fuses don't look broken. Is it possible that I may have put the wrong fuse in the wrong place?

Head and taillight work, turn signals dont

Bike is a 1979 xs400. Took the old lady on a ride the other day but didn't adjust my suspension and once I came home I realized I had no lights at all. Quickly found the culprit to be a couple of pinched wires leading to the fuses. Now I have power back to my tail and headlight, but can't seem...

Questions for Canadians about bushings and bearings

Thanks a million for all the info and research on your behalf. A couple of questions though: Is this where you got your parts? Like is all this stuff on your bike and working properly? For xs650 direct, the part works for the xs400? And that other thread regarding the rear bushings. He states...

Questions for Canadians about bushings and bearings

Im looking to buy new wheel bearings, bronze bushings for the swing arm, and tapered needle bearings for the steering neck. What are my canadian options? Or something that won't cost more to ship then the actual part... Part 2: If you have any info on bearing/bushing/needle bearing sizes...

    Minton mods on the forks

Thank you for the insight bcware. I'm going to look into aprilia forks for a future mod further down the line. As for the minton mods i believe i saw somebody talking about it briefly the last time i searched this topic. My goal with my bike currently is to just upgrade the archaic suspension. A...

    Minton mods on the forks

So I'm just about done wrapping up my fork oil and seal change. I've got the oil in hand and I'm just wondering if it would be a good idea to follow what the minton mods say for putting in oil up to 6 inches below the top instead of the factory spec 130cc. Has anyone else rebuilt their forks...

    New controls = headlight woes

Slapped on a new control due to the old one being faulty/old and broken. The turn signals work and so does the horn but now I'm having issues with the light... it just refuses to come on at all. Could it be my new control giving issues? The new control only has 3 wires instead of 4.

    Sorta stuck in neutral

Went around the city today with absolutely no issues whatsoever. Once I got home and pulled in, I couldn't drop it back down to first from being in second. Pulled it in the garage and with a bit of persuasion I got it back into neutral. So now shift into first no problem but now I can't put it...
