1981 XS400 Special II Cafe Racer Build

Thanks guys, Looks like I might have to build my own 2 into 1 intake, the guy I bought it from still hasnt made / shipped it and its been a month now.

Finally got my intake. Got it hooked up and fuel lines ran tonight. If my oil strainer cover gasket shows up tomorrow I just might have it running !

Its alive ! Ended up swapping the coil connectors around and it fired up instantly what a simple fix. It does run lean on left cylinder and rich on the right but hey its running with the single carb. Its almost finishied ! need to figure out my license plate mounting and tie up a few loose ends but she is almost ready for the street. Here are two videos and some more pics:

Looks sweet mate. 2 questions for you. Firstly, hows it handle with the longer rear shocks and the forks dropped about 10mm? And secondly, have you tried to start it with the shorter kick starter?

I love the look of the pipes, maybe try some internal baffles to bring down the db.

Ya havent had a real ride to test "handling yet" just got excited that it was actually running again so did a couple around the block tests. It wasnt built for handling hence the longer shocks and huge vintage tires. I havent tried the starter. Not sure that I want to test out my welding :) as long as the starter works I will leave the kickstarter as a looks only piece. The baffles are a good idea ! I need to header wrap the pipes so I might cut them and put some baffles in then wrap em.

Installed some "lollipops" in the headers and it took the bite off, and started the wrapping the pipes. After they dry I will be doing the high temp silicone spray on them that should blackin them up a bit more.

Looking really good! The wrapping really adds a nice finish to an already beautiful bike.

I think we need a video of the new exhaust to see how it sounds.

Did you solve the problem with the mixture being rich on one side and lean on the other?

I am coating the exhaust the exhaust wrap with High temp silicone coating today then I will try to get an updated video of the exhaust sound. As for the mixture there is really no fix for the lean condition since the XS400 runs a 180 degree crankshaft

My sentiments exactly. The tires look really good too. Where did you find those? If it's not too personal for a public forum, about how much do they run?

I got them from Summit Racing.com They were $300 for the pair when I bought them if you look them up now on summits site they appear to be going for a bit more.

Took some of the last pics of this bike :( Guy from Hawaii saw it on ebay and after his check clears next week it will be on a long journey to Honolulu. Sad to see it go but I need to fund the next project / toy.
